Both gargling with salt water, and the aspirin answers are good. But use soluble aspirin, and dissolve it first using only abut half the recommended amount of water, then gargle for at least 30 seconds. Repeat every two hours.

Dissolving honey and brown sugar in water is also comforting, though it probably won't do much to cure the throat! And lastly, if none of these remedies work within 48 hours, or your throat has yellow spots, be sure to go to your doctor.

Day Quil (has a pain reliever and decongestant)

If you don't want to use OTC drugs, then try little less than HOT tea with clover honey and lemon. The melted honey in your tea will coat and soothe your throat. The lemon, actually reduces your body temperature a couple degrees.

I also like Halls Defense with Zinc and Vitamin C. Aside from the obvious soothing of your sore throat, the Zinc and C will boost your immune system.

Also wear scarves and turtle neck tops. This will keep the cold air from snapping on your throat, which doesn't help any.

Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

I know that this is going to sound really really gross but it works like a charm. Take a 8oz glass of warm water add two tablespoons of salt. Stir that up and then take a regular strength Aspirin not Tylenol or Advil it has to be Aspirin because of the ASA factor in it. Crush up the aspirin and add it to the warm water and salt solution and gargle with it until the cup is gone and repeat every two to three hours as needed.

If it is a minor throat problem gargle with warm water with a pinch of salt.If it gets really bad and you have trouble swallowing see your doctor and most likely you will be given antibiotics because of an infection.Do not drink anything hot because it will irritate it further.

Zinc lozenges have worked best for me for the soreness. To get rid of the mucus, gargle with warm salted water.

If it is an infection, I gargle with something alcoholic first (Bacardi seems to work just fine). Then to sooth the pain, both chocolate and lemon tea with honey work wonderfully.
