The french foreign Legion?

What was their purpose? we see movies talk of them all the time. Sahara showed a fort in Africa that was theirs

but do they still exist? what do they do? were they a invading army?

Purpose is to fight wars for France without using the french! As its foreign! Also makes good idea for movies.

Yes they still exist and they do counter insurgency work mostly. They are not an invading army they usually go to countries that request there help which is usually a former french colony like Algeria or some other African disaster area. They are roughly equivalent to the US Rangers or Green Berets and yes the are mostly foreigners that makes up the legion. Look them up on there web site French foreign legion.com

They do and are incredibly tough as Soldiers they truely know their being sent of to die ! They are made up of desperate foreigners who find themselfes seeking clemency from the Law and arrive offcoarse in France. They serve the purpose of the French because offcourse they want others to fight their Wars and Battles for them ! Thats the whole point their not French, so are considered expendible. After completion of service they are pardoned with clemency and often issued with new identities ! I guess if you were fit enough and trying to beat a murder charge you could walk up to their gates ! If you survive than your free !

The French Foreign Legion is alive and well and based in (I think) Marseilles in southern France. Google them up, you'll come across lots of websites for them. I had a book on them and lost it. But the history of the Legion is utterly fascinating!

there's (or was) a tv show on Discovery channel about a survivalist named Bear Grylls called Man vs. Wild. he was in the French Foreign Legion to see if he could survive.
