this might seem like a crazzy question, but i have read stuides that say that despite how powerfull the Soviet union was in military and politics, that their economy was just this side of bankrupt.

That they could not afford the costs of a war of any good size and this affected why Cuba did not become a war, Afghanistan, and the 80's weapons build up.

It was said that the 50% of the Soviet Unions spending went towards their military. The factory workers were not working, because they had nothing to work for. The pay that they received afforded them nothing, and there was basically nothing in the markets to even be purchased.
Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher spread their economic ideas throughout Europe, with emphasis on The Soviet Union and their new leader Gorbachev (sp).
Some have said the cold war ended as a result of a phone call. Poland had just voted in a landslide for a new leader Walesa. He called Gorbachev and asked what he was to do to rectify Poland's struggling economy. Gorbachev said that he should do nothing. Let the economy works itself out.
Money and more importantly th economies of all nations involved were mostly responsible for both the beginning and the end of the Cold War.

I think it could be said that money won the cold war in two distinct ways. On a practical level, the technological competition, arms race and defense buildup between the two superpowers was a much more substantial drain on the Russian economy than the American economy. The disadvantage of Russia and the Warsaw Pact nations with tightly controlled, communist economies vs. the free market had less opportunity for capital to drive growth in the economy at large, and the Western nations were freer and more capable in that respect. Thus even where Russian technology was equal to or superior to Western, Western nations could spend more, and on a greater variety of items.

Yes. A communist economy can not compete with free markets. It was just a matter time and of containing Russian expansion, without having a full scale war, until they collapsed. That is what the people who devised the policy after WWII believed and they were right.
