Research has found that it has a lot to do w/ keeping their hair from matting. If you own two cats - one w/ long hair and one w/ short hair - like i do, then you will notice a big difference in the amount of time that is spent grooming themselves. My cat w/ much longer hair; a half-Persian, spends about 5 times more time grooming his hair, then the other cat w/ very short hair.

Now, whether or not it's a sence of conscious is a topic for another group - but i honestly don't know if they understand the concept of "I".

Animals are very much aware, and they are conscious of their environment, their food sources and themselves.

As for the grooming, you can attribute that to the "conscious of self" part. They like to be "pretty" and that is an indicator of general health.

Yes especially Persian cats If you shave them they go into a sulking state.A friend of mine had to shave hers because off the her that clogged and he went into a sulk. The clogging can cause soars on there bodies, that's why it needed a shave.
