Do you think that we will be able to help save our world from the environmental changes which are currently headlining the news? Or are we too selfish and too used to our way of living to alter our lives now?

I personally don't think that we will be able to save the planet, we may be able to slow down the whole process but I think the damage has been done.

I want to know what other people think!

this is from the 1970's... it says.. we are heading for global cooling.... now that thats out of style.. it is time for global warming...

think about this... nothing you do will matter at all... the earth will do as it wants and you cant stop it.. simply put.. we dont matter..

the earth has in the past and will in the further go into ice ages.. and come out of them... and in the 1970s.. guess what.. all the scienctist around the world all said the same thing... OH MY GOD we are all going to freeze and starve to DEATH and it is your fault!!!.. guess what... didnt happen..
then they said OH MY GOD!!!! when the world hits 6 billion people we will all DIE,,, guess what.. didnt happen..
then they said OH MY GOD... hole in the ozone layer and its your fault... well guess what.. every planet with air or gas has a hole in its north and south poles.... and they change in size..
in short.. while we are the.... ummm,,, smartest people to be on the earth... we are still very stupid and have no clue

It's going to be a close run thing. The worry is that the timescale for action is narrowing. Not so long ago it was 2 degrees by the end of this century. Then things changed and it looked to me that it was sort this out in 25 years or we're toast; very recently Gore has said that it could be as soon as 10 years before we pass the point of no return.

The galling thing is that with a sum of money completely within our capcity to afford (at a national level) we could switch to carbon neutral power generation in 5 years, using technology available today. For the UK the cost would be £50-100Bn and the result would be a big financial gain for the economy and for consumers alike (thats about 1-2p on income tax for about 5 years). Just think about being able to export all of our North Sea productivity and sell our carbon offsets - it would generate enough money to pay for the conversion; and save the planet at the same time.

The reason why that won't happen is vested interest, ambition and greed - the very problems we face with the emerging economies - in their rush to catch up with the developed world they could undermind all our efforts to sort this out - and the cost could be very high indeed.

I have a clean conscience on this - I now ride a bicycle to work, we recycle everything we can, we're looking to grow our own veggies and I've started to pester my MP on all things environmental.

Don't despair - get active - lead from the front and by example and tell everyone you know about the problem - awareness is still an issue for many, and this is a people power thing.

Sincerely

LT

These "environmental changes" are only headlining the news because the liberals make a big deal about it. They know our Earth isn't in danger, so they're not planning to do anything about it. It's just a way to make money. I don't believe them one bit. There is scientific (not political!) proof that contradicts statements of global warming (if that's what you're talking about when you say "environmental changes"). There is nothing we need to save, because nothing is in danger.

The planet on which we are guests will go its own way since it has its own life cycles.

We live on the earths crust while the inside boils away, it would be sensible if we all decided to be more thoughtful about our lives, living on this an unstable world.

The environmental changes you see on the news are not really changes - overall the Earth barely fluctuates. It has nothing to do with how with live our lives - I am convinced of that.

this planet doesn't need saving, it will carry on til the sun expands.

However life and humanity as we know it must either adapt or be replaced. the current global consumer growth society is unsustainable on a finite planet - this is so obvious & self-evident and contrary to current culture that most people simply deny any problem or responsibility

were all screwed!!
there is no way of saving our planet the future of the human race is doomed.

so why do we bother to moan about exhaust gasses.?
even if we cut them down the damage is already done.

im not a selfish person and i do my part but seriously why bother.
