Sounds like it could be one of two things, either someone is doing work on the pipes "upstream" of your house and some dirt got in the water or your pipes are beginning to rust. If it's the former it will go away after the water has been running for a while. If it's the latter the only way to fix it properly is to have all the pipes in your house replaced. Hope it's the former!!!

If both hot and cold water, are you on city water? If so, they may have flushed the system which will cause water to run brown for a few hours afterwards. Check with the city if this is the case to confirm or rule this out.
If on a well system pipes coming into the home may be affected and thus now the water is showing up this way...have someone test your well water first to ensure there isn't a problem with surface water contamination. If not then have a plumbing firm check for eroded piping.
Is it just the hotwater? If so, your hot water tank may be the reason...if you rent the tank from a utility call them and they will test it and replace if necessary. Usually renting means there is no charge to you to have it inspected or replaced.
If you own it...you will have to pay for inspection/replacement unless you have insurance or a plan that covers this.
Good luck.

The chances are the water board are working on the mains in your area. Give it an hour then run your taps for a good while. The water should clear. If not contact your local supplier

There is a leakage in the main water supply line to your house and the earth is getting mixed in the water. Inform the concerned local body immediately.
Do not use this contaminated water for drinking or cooking meals for it may cause all sorts of stomach ailments. Do not use it for washing clothes for it will leave more stains than before. Do not use it for car wash either for the dust particles in it may scratch the car paint. However, its absolutely safe for gardening.

This could depend on a lot of different things. First, if you are on a municipal water system, they could be flushing the system. If you are on a well, it could be the casing needs repair and is allowing surface water into your well. If you are on city water, call and check to see if they are doing any maintenance to the water system. If you don't want to do that, you can wait it out and see if it gets any better.

That all depends on where your water comes from, I lived on a farm and our water came from a bore and from time to time te water would go brown. If you are on the town supply it could have something to do with your pipes.

The city is probably cleaning out the drains. Let the water run until it runs clear.
