how is it in 1914 the germans along with Austria, Turkey and Romania (i think was the 4th) could not take france, but could defeat the russians?

the entire war in france took place in a corner of the country that probably wasnt more then 100 square miles in area.

but yet 20 years later they nearly over ran all of europe with ease.

The biggest difference was equipment. The tank wasn't even made until late WWI, and the airplane had yet to be made as powerful.

Also, that corner of France was a heavily defended, concrete walled line gaurded by thousunds of troops. All either side could throw at each other was infantry, which would be demolished by the gaurded positions with usually machine gun fire.

The French had the biggest Army in Europe in 1914. It was close run thing in 1914, and The Germans were nearly in Paris before they were stopped, and WW1 became a stalement in the trenches.

In WW2 the French were essentially planning to fight WW1 all over again and built fortifications called the Maginot line. The Germans just went round, and the French confidence collapsed. The Germans had superior tactics like use of air support.

The Russians were beaten in WW1 because of the Communist Revolution

Trench warfare in WWI meant stalemate, by its very nature. WWII, however was a mobile war, initially the Germans used the tactic of blitzkrieg while the French and British generals were stuck in the old mindset. It took them awhile before they caught up to the germans in the tactics.

In WWII the germans used tanks in massed formations at the point of attack. The allies used theirs in penny packets support infantry. They were easily defeated even though their tanks were equal and superior to the Mark III and IV's in 1940-41.
