This is a very good question. David was an incredible servant of God; He fought the giant and was successful because of his great faith.
When he became King, he was even good at that. This is a great lesson. David as King, saw Bethsheba in the pool - he wanted her really badly. He called for her, and as King had rights to take her (sexually) - and he did.
She became pregnant. Now, Bethseba's husband was a soldier in the army of the King.
So, David called for him to come home on leave. David told him to enjoy some good food, and go and sleep with his wife. Obviously, David wanted those two together so the pregnancy would not be questioned. Well, Uriah (I believe that was Beth's husbands name) ate with the King, and then instead of going home, he slept on the doorstep of David. When David woke and asked him why he didn't sleep with his wife, Uriah said "How can I eat, drink and lye with my wife - the Tribe of Israel is fighting in the battlefield and dying - and the Ark of the Covenant is there - As God is my witness, I will not do such a thing". This was a loyal soldier, if there ever was one. So David tried to get him drunk so he'd have sex with his wife. Didn't work. So, David let Uriah go back to battle, and sent him back with a note for the top General, which told them to leave Uriah in the heat of battle and let him die there. Thats exactly what happened - Uriah died in battle. The birth of Solomon resulted, who of course was in line for the King's throne.
God used people throughout the Bible just like David. Many people have a hard time with this one - esspecially those in Military service -
How could David have done such a thing?
Well, the answer is very simple:
God doesn't use anybody who is perfect because there aren't any perfect people to use.
We are all capable of God only knows what, as long as we are in the flesh. But yet, David is one of the top servants of God in Bible History.
So never think that because you've done this or done that - that God won't use you. He certainly may use you.

Strengths; he was brave as a warrior, wise, and ruled with an iron fist. His weaknesses were his temper, his lack of flexibility and his sex drive.
Historicly (outside the bible) David was written of as a great Warrior King and a tyrant of sorts. Persian texts confirm he existed and was a force to be reconed with. But bblicly it is odd he was so close to God when he committed adultry, murder, and was very permiscuous (100 concubines...). I think he was elevated due to the fact he did God's will and never lied to God about his shortcomings. (ie, beg for forgivness on sins he knew he would commit again). He was a bad man, but only human. He merely did God's will while trying to be the best HUMAN he could be...

Ultimately, David was a man after God's own heart.
Acts 13:22
After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
1 Samuel 13:14 (To Saul)
But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command."
