It is because of the joint locks and chokes taught. In Judo although you can start as young as 5. You are not supposed to be taught and use any submissions until you are 14. It's for safety. It's bad enough when a 12 year old goes around kicking or punching his friends and family because he learned a new one this week in Karate. It's another thing to have that 12 year old choke to death or break another kids arm just because he wanted to show what he learned this week. I am not saying all kids will do this.
Another major point is that up until 14-16 the body is still developing a great deal. Some have not even finished puberty. Your joints are still growing and puting that kind of strain on them could cause alot of damage.

So the short answer: Safety and dicipline.

Aikido also does not have competitions. So if you are looking to compete it is not the style for you.
It is derived from Aki JuJitsu in the 1920s and also takes aspects from Judo. So I would suggest you check out Jujitsu or better yet Judo which was also derived from JuJitsu, in the 1880s.

It is simply your instructor. Some instructors start people at 3 and some at 6 in the same style of matial art. The reason for this is simply the instructor's beliefs and his insurance binder.

I run a school and some insurance companies limit what styles you can teach, what ages, and even how long classes can run with a couple! It is just a game insurance companies play. However, we have to obey their wishes to be covered.

My suggestion, is to just keep looking around. You will find someone who will teach you.

if i were you i would have continued taekwondo because you are doing it for years when you're at 16 and u have black belt, but it matters on you, why are you doing sport and taekwondo? if u want something to defend yourself and beat another people on the streets you better change it to aikido but you better know that taekwondo is one of the fastest martial arts in the world...
