There are four places on the Scottish mainland from which you can catch a ferry to the Western Isles - Ullapool, Uig, Mallaig, and Oban (Uig is on the Isle of Skye which is now connected to the mainland by bridge).
Depending which part of the Western Isles you want to be in would determine the best place to sail from. If you sailed from Mallaig or Oban you'd need to catch another ferry within the Western Isles to get to the main island. The main island is almost split in two with the top part being the Isle of Lewis and the bottom pat being the Isle of Harris - confusing as it's actually just one island.
Oban would take about 3 hours, it's the shortest drive but the longest ferry crossing.
Mallaig and Ullapool would take about 5 hours - Ullapool is further in terms of miles to drive but the roads are faster (A9 most of the way).
Uig would take about 7 hours, the longest drive but the shortest ferry crossing.
Journey times could be a lot longer if travelling at peak tourist times - especially the routes to Mallaig and Uig.
If you don't like sailing then go via Ullapool, if you prefer sailing to driving then go via Oban. If you want to see the best scenery then go via Uig or Mallaig.

Its been a while since I've driven it and it will depend a lot on weather and traffic. If going via Glasgow to Oban, probably about 3 hours. To the Kyle of Lochalsh around another 2 hours or so to the Oban time.
