My sister works with old people and quite a lot of them die. She says about 90% of them say they can see stuff that isn't there. Not sure what it means but I'd like to think it's someone good coming to cross you over. Or they could just be hallucinating because they are so close to death.

First you must believe in afterlife. The shadow is a friend or relation coming to help the person who is dying to cross to the other side. Normally this is accompanied by the dying person becoming suddenly very alert and smiling, because they can actually see who the person is in the shadow.

This makes for a very peaceful death and eases the way.

I understand what a lot people say when they say that people who pass see a loved one who has gone before them just before their own death...but could that the shadow also be the energy leaving her own body before her passing....the aura that surrounds the body also changes near death and can create visions of shadows and physic vision becomes more profound, hence the person who is going throught the dying process being able to see loved ones who have gone before. So personally, I think it is the change in the aura that gives the person the ability to see loved ones which helps their dying process.

My mum also passed away 8 months ago from cancer and I used to stay with her during the night as I could not leave her and go home. I remember one morning at 8 am, when she woke up the first thing she said to me was that her dad was there. I asked her where and she said that he was sat at the end of the bed. My grandfather had died 3 years earlier. I told her that he was taking care of her, then it happened again during the night, after that my mum slipped into a coma and died a few days later. I commented this to the family and many have said that when someone is dying in many occasions they see a beloved one who has already died, they appear to them to guide them to heaven.

Death is something that will happen to all of us, and I am sure we don't all imagine the ending the same as everyone else. Maybe she was a spiritual person who, having been around death before, could sense the final moments of the people she nursed, was fined tuned to what was happening, and to her a dark shadow appeared, and knowing herself, her time was close, prophesied the same.

My mother died of cancer at age 34. Because of the pain she was in she had to lie in bed in the fetal position (all rolled up). Before she died, she smiled as if she saw a vision, stretched her limbs out for the first time in months, wiped her eyes, and died. Visions do occur. I believe in angels, and demons, both. Everything has an opposite. Sometimes doctors claim that morphine can affect someone's visions, but in some cases, such as in my mother's case, she was not on pain medication at the time of passing.

I was a hospice nurse and have seen countless patients see dead relatives, or things that were not there. I too believe that it is someone helping them pass over to the other side. I saw one woman who was in a coma for one week open her eyes and look up to the ceiling, smile, and then passed away. Perhaps that is what your friend saw.

I'm a nurse. I'm also a Christian and I believe that the shadow was someone to guide her to the next life. People have said to have seen relatives who had passed on before them or shadows. People also have came back from the dead/was brought back to life would tell some interesting stories as to where they went and what they saw. I believe that your friend is in a better place and is safe. Shadows are from a higher power, believe that. God is here and is with us everywhere we go if only people would allow God in their lives. Know that she is truly at peace.
