Hi there,
I went to Ancestry.com and found a few things. First of all there was a Mike Markovcy in the World War 2 draft cards who was from Carbon Pennsylvania who listed his birthplace as Loza, Hungary. Second, I went to the 1930 census and there was indeed a Markovcy family in Carbon County, Pennsylvania and the head of the family listed his birthplace as Czechoslovakia. Both he and his wife spoke Russian. One son was born in New Jersey and the other in Pennsylvania. There is a tree online with John Markovcy in it. He was married to Genevieve Michalik. I hope this helps. If you need a copy of that family in the 1930 census, let me know and I will E-mail you the census page. Blessings

Hey Ryam,
After looking in several places, Ellis Island also said that Markovcy was not found. LDS Family Search has 2 Markovcy entries in the USA only. Swyrich.com says not found.
Ellis Island uses a SOUNDEX (similar sound algorithm), for names, and it suggested that Markovci or Markoffsky were both 93% possibilities.
Searching on those names comes up with one immigrant from Russia as follows:
First Name: Jude
Last Name: Markoffsky
Ethnicity: Russian, Hebrew
Last Place of Residence: Fastow, Russia
Date of Arrival: Dec 16, 1910
Age at Arrival: 21y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Mauretania
Port of Departure: Liverpool
Manifest Line Number: 0012
If the link below does not let you in, you can create your own free account on Ellis Island.
The entries in Family Search are Births from 1910 and 1915.
From what I can find, Russian.

I am not sure how you spell it and how originally they write and read it, but I think that would be someone from East Europe or someone who is Slav. So, if you want more precise answer, write to me.
