pain at the IV site (very common)

infection (phlebitis - not very common)

infiltration (when the IV catheter isn't actually in a vein, and the fluid gets deposited into the surrounding tissue - not too bad if it's just normal saline, can be dangerous with some medications infused through the IV site)

puncturing through the vein during an IV attempt (usually just results in some swelling and a nasty bruise)

bruising (common)

Like any cut it can cause an infection, if it's put in wrong or your vein is missed you can get a bruise or if it's left in too long it can damage your vein.

If you feel any pain other that a slight prick when the needle goes in something is probably wrong. Most likely it would be fluid in not going into the vein. It's uncomfortable and you see a lump growing.
