Whenever my 2-year-old nephew coughs, my father, who helps look after him in the daytime, coughs louder in order to deafen my nephew's coughs. I find this really annoying and it makes me mad because it feels like my father is drowning my nephew's own voice and it feels like intimidation, and I'm afraid it could affect my nephew's self-esteem when he goes to kindy school onwards. What's your view on this? Thanks in advance.

my husband did that one day to our son, so i asked him why, and he said he wanted him to stop coughing, and that it would encourage him to go somewhere else to cough. Of course i told him he was being ridiculous and he hasn't ever done it since, but i would ask why he does that? it is very uncomfortable and can give wierd messages to the kid... the best interest is always the main concern when it comes to a child- would you tell your dad to stop if he was doing it to you? explain to him why it bothers you. if he has a good reason that's not completely retarded, then you'll be more comfortable with it... if not, try and talk to him and see what you can do to make him stop.

Have you asked why your father is doing this? Have you spoken to your nephew's parents?
There are too many variables here. It could be a silly game they are playing, or it could be something else.
My advice is to speak to the parents first, express your concerns, and let them handle how they see fit.

How odd. Maybe your Dad is just trying to play with your Nephew? I wouldn't put too much emphasis on it. I think you are reading more into it than there is.

Could be sympathy coughs. Kind of like yawns. They're contagious. Or I'll hear someone clear their throat, then I'll clear mine just because I think 'gee, that's a good idea'.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

The question is....why does your father do that. Is he jealous of the 2-year-old and trying to get attention. Maybe ask him why he does that.
