I normally put the peanut butter on both slices of the bread first if I am packing a sandwich for lunch then put the jelly on. The peanut butter on both slices keeps the jelly from soaking through the bread by the time lunch rolls around.

Peanut butter just got on my list of never going to eat it again. Especially not Peter Pan, or the Walmart label Great Value. We have a CoAgra plant in out community, just a couple miles from our Walmart. It is not the plant that produces the peanut butter.
I guess I will be having margarine and jelly sandwiches!

Peanut butter on one slice of bread, jelly on the other. Bananas in between. It's great when you toast the bread first, and use strawberry, not grape jelly. Here's a video that may help.

personally, I don't think there are many recipes that are more american than PB&J! :-) Our family always puts the PB on one slice, jelly on the other...making sure that jelly is spilling over the side of the bread in order to make the biggest mess possible while eating it... with a really large, very cold glass of milk.
Hmm, I know what I'm having for breakfast now...

peanut butter first, its thicker than jelly,so it doesnt spread evenly on top of jelly.use a fork to stir your jelly so you wont have large bumps, then apply even amount on top of peanut butter .close with 2nd piece of bread.

As all-american as it gets.
I put the pb on one slice of bread first. Then, I put the jelly on the other slice and put the two slices together.
