Is Shingles Contagious?
WebMD Public Information from the National Institutes of Health

As early as 1909 a German scientist suspected that the viruses causing chickenpox and shingles were one and the same. In the 1920's and 1930's the case was strengthened. In an experiment, children were inoculated with fluid from the lesions of patients with shingles. Within 2 weeks about half the children came down with chickenpox. Finally in 1958 detailed analyses of the viruses taken from patients with either chickenpox or shingles confirmed that the viruses were identical.

This study also proved that a person with shingles can pass the virus to individuals who have never had chickenpox, but these individuals will develop chickenpox not shingles. A person with chickenpox cannot communicate shingles to someone else. In order for people to develop shingles they must already harbor the virus in their nervous system, and for those who do harbor the virus, having contact with someone with chickenpox will not trigger shingles. Additionally, a person with shingles cannot communicate shingles to another individual.

No.

Since you have had chicken pox, you should be fine. However, if anyone in the office has HIV, they are at serious risk, if they have not had the chicken pox immunization, or a very large chicken pox case. To be on the safe side, get yourself some sanitized cleaner for your hands and use it all the time. It doesn't need water or to be wiped dry. Shingles, cold sores, chicken pox are all related as Herpes. To really know what your chances are, DO ask your doctor about your sensitivity to the shingles. You may be not as healthy as you think. Call and ask the question if you cannot afford to go to a Dr.. Call the Public Health Dept. and ask the question for free.

If you have had chicken pox, and you have a normal immune system then no. Chicken pox and shingles are caused by the same virus, so once you have had it you build up antibodies for it. Shingles usually occur in people with compromised immune systems.

Hey. I'm confused, because I had shingles before. None of those people who got near to me have acquired shingles. Some of them touched it..But after that none of them had it. One thing that I observed is that my older sister had shingles first, then me after years have passed, then a year after me, my brother had it, good thing he recovered earlier because of the similarity of the symptoms that I had before so I recommended a drug. Why is it so?

YES! Shingles is a form of chicken poxs! If you never had it or are pregnant get the hell away from them. I worked in nursing homes and believe me, shingles is the last stop to "sterile-ville" if your know what I mean...

Yes You are at risk,a lot of people do not think Shingles is contageous,or that it can strike more than once,it is contageous, and can strike more than once! Shingles is Actually a by product from the Chicken Pox Virus, which we all know is very contageous. To get Shingles means the Chicken Pox Virus is still either active within your Bosses Body,or he is a Carrier for the Chicken Pox Virus. Have you Been Immunised against Chicken Pox? Please if you can go & talk to your Doctor or your Health care Nurse about this.Especially at this time as Chicken Pox is becomming more active especially to children and people whom are at risk, mainly those with Autommune dysfunctions, are in poor health and the elderly and infirm,Even Striking down helthy young adlts! At least for your own peice of mind, please seek out medical advice regarding this matter ok,try not to worry to much, Your Boss has had a rather serious attack of chicken pox, perhaps as a child. There is an incubation period for chicken pox and shingles,if you have been working with your boss for some time whilst he has Shingles,I Implore you to seek Medical Attention Immediately,Actually,Your Boss Should NOT be at WORK with this Condition,Should NOT be In Contact with anyone,His own Doctor Should have told him this, unless he is ignoring his Doctor! In fact, your Boss can become Very Ill himself from Shingles,Believe me this is NO LAUGHING MATTER.What if one of your co-workers have Children,They will get Chicken PoxSpread it around the schools they go to.In fact I personally give Blood to the Children's Hospital,as when I was Pregnant it was dicovered I had Extremely Strong Antibodies against Chicken Pox,I with my whole family, including our family Doctor at the time when I and my Siblings were all children, even our parents and their friends got it,we had to be nursed isolated from anyone else as it was a Particularly Virulant Strain! One of my Brothers almost died,as his chicken Pox was not just on the outside of his skin, but went internally as well.I was very Lucky,I only got one spot in the middle of my forhead, which I still have a scar to this day.But Not every case is this severe,I'm talking way back in the 1950s.Also look out for any Cold Sores on your or around your lips, these r also caused by the chicken pox virus,so even if you do not develop Shingles, which you r at risk of,you could also develop Cold Sores,& they are very hard to get rid of once you develop them!Your Boss should be home in bed,as he could or is probably sicker than he is letting on,in many ways Shingles makes an adult feel sicker than a child whom has a simple case of Chicken Pox! You Need to be brave & report this to some kind of medical professional,as everyone at your workplace is at risk, and anyone whom comes into your workplace, then workers going about with after hours, weekend, time of daily routines. It's rather a Concern,Sorry to have to tell you this, but these r the facts of Shingles & Chicken Pox & Cold Sores,All these could be passed on,not just to you employes, but to the whole town you live in!
