I have a Degree in Psychology and looking for the opportunity, would this help ? I also have a drive with high range PCA charge (drink drive) from 17 years ago would that still count against me ?

People join DFAT a number of ways. To be recruited within Australia (and thus enjoy the rights and working conditions of federal public servants) you may consider either the graduate program (exceptionally competitive to enter), or come in as a 'lateral' (DFAT recruits 'mid career' mainstream staff). In both cases you could be sent anywhere in the Department; although your interests and aptitude can be an influence ultimately organisational necessity will dictate your career.

Alternatively try to get a job directly from an Australian mission overseas, although you will not have the security of tenure and conditions.

I wouldn't worry about the charge, but I certainly would not hide it in your security clearance process.

Your youthful indescretion should not be a hindrance - life's lesson learned, and all that. Don't dwell on it, just be up front and honest about it when the time comes.
