Absolutely not, in fact, a crock pot takes less liquid than oven cooking. The juices from the roast will stay in the pot, so a little added liquid goes a long way.

I'd say 1" in the bottom is more than enough!

You don't need any water. Believe me, it will end up with a bunch of juice for gravy. If you are too afraid to try it without, only put in 1/4 of a cup. It WILL be very moist and will fall apart when you try to take it out of the crock pot. A good recipe for a roast is adding a can of crm of mushroom soup and a package of Lipto Onion Soup mix, it will make its own gravy and give the roast a nice flavor.

Covered as in having a lid on the crock pot. Yes, as it will cook quicker. But if you can't fit a lid on the pot then cover it with aluminum foil. This will work and it also helps in cooking it more evenly.
Covered in water, NO. Keep about an inch or so of water (Broth) in the bottom of the crock pot and make sure that you baste this during cooking as well make sure the broth is there as well. Pork will take more time to cook in a crock pot versus an oven. Good Luck.

I never add any liquid, unless I want something extra for flavor. I put carrots onions and potatoes in the bottom and the roast on top. The veggies will provide enough liquid, and with the lid on, the liquid will stay in the pot, keeping the roast moist.

One more bit of advice: If you don't already have them, get those liners. They aren't cheap, but they are worth it.

No it does not have to be completely covered in water. If you are placing it in the crockpot alone (no veggies) I would use something other than water to give it a little flavor. Like maybe a broth/stock even if it is a veggie broth/stock.....

I never have mine totally covered and it's never dry. I do fill it up about 3/4 of the way after adding vegetables. I usually check it to see if it needs more liquid, but I can't remember ever having to add any.

What needs to be covered with water is the sides of the crockpot where the heating element is. That means over two thirds full. Pork of course is unclean.
