Depends what mixers you are using, gin and tonic needs a good wedge of lime, no compromise!
As far as vodka is concerned, it really does depend what you're mixing it with.
Vodka and cranberry - lime
Vodka and orange - orange etc etc
Try this though, one big water melon , one bottle of raspberry vodka, make a hole in the top of the melon and then slowly pour the vodka in, leave for a few hours (ideally twelve or more), cut the melon up and eat as normal

More Vodka with the vodka and more Gin with the Gin?
I like putting Vodka, ice ,strawberry's and cherries in a blender ( sugar if you like it sweeter) delicious. I hate Gin so don't know but i'm sure you could discover something more exciting than lemon.

As i have a business making Fruit Infused Gins and Vodkas (www.bushesbrew.com), perhaps I can help.
As gin is flavoured with the juniper berry, it tends to go best with the plum family (greengage, sloe, victoria, damsons) as well as the orange family (orange, clementines, satsumas). Also you can try lemon.
Vodka works well with soft fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant, mulberry, strawberry) as well as lime, lemon, cherry, apple and blackberry - it tends to not have the underlying base note of gin and therefore you tend to get a purer fruit flavour.
We have experimented with chilli and black pepper and are hoping to bring out horseradish - all in vodka.
Have fun

The new thing for gin and tonic is cuccumber. I use lemon for a drink mixed with lemonade, lime with tonic, sometimes both for a long drink. I normally put lime in bacardi and lemon in vodka, dark spirits such as whiskey, tia maria, so co etc a slice of orange looks and tastes great. In pimms orange, lime, cuccumber, strawberries and mint

Mulled (mush them up!) raspberries (fresh if you can get them) and sugar syrup goes lovely with Vodka.
Fresh Lime slices go very nicely with Gin.
