How does this get imprinted onto one's psyche? I have heard abuse as a child or fetishism as possible explanations. Could there be other reasons? And is the desire to wear them reversible? Can anyone elaborate?

It is caused by something going wrong in the person's mind. Only the thorough background check of the person's childhood and life may give a clue but it may not. Some things are just not explainable and are what they are. I feel sorry for them, there is a mental probloem, no doubt and this can make for a very difficult life with no friends no social life and possible institution bound if they also have the urge to show their diapoers and what's in them. I've seen this before. The guy is off the streets now. Thank God.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to wear diapers!!! It's simply an undergarment which society associates only with babies... so they assume that if anyone else wants to wear them then they are freaks! How stupid.
Diapers are actually very comfortable and provide a secure feeling for many folks. Why should it be anyone else's business what people have as underwear?
It has, in my experience, nothing to do with any abuse. Perhaps it is part of a fetish - but it's a pretty harmless one!
I wear diapers regularly and get a lot of pleasure from simply wearing them. Rarely 'use' them but they are so comfy and my wife likes me in 'em too! :)
Folks should stop being so judgemental here!

This could just be because this person is too lazy, but other possibilities are there as their mental state of mind. I don't know why some one would rather go in a diaper instead of the bathroom, unless they are disabledor can not communicate needing to go to the bathroom. If this is a fedish, that's just wrong!

I heard a rumour that a friend of mine wears them , I attribute it to his upbringing in that he never really got a chance to grow up .
I'm sure theres a greater explanation to this but i dont have the time to elaborate.

nothing is wrong with it. Its just a piece of clothing and to some us much more confortable and secure than normal underwear. If you like, thats fine. Its just a fetish. a great one.
