The authoritative word of Lord Sri Krishna in Bhagavad-gita
" Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be."
"As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change". Bhagavad-gita-2.12 &13.

That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
Bhagavad-gita-2.17. Below is the purport to this verse by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya ofISKCON(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)

Therefore, the individual particle of spirit soul is a spiritual atom smaller than the material atoms, and such atoms are innumerable. This very small spiritual spark is the basic principle of the material body, and the influence of such a spiritual spark is spread all over the body as the influence of the active principle of some medicine spreads throughout the body. This current of the spirit soul is felt all over the body as consciousness, and that is the proof of the presence of the soul. Any layman can understand that the material body minus consciousness is a dead body, and this consciousness cannot be revived in the body by any means of material administration. Therefore, consciousness is not due to any amount of material combination, but to the spirit soul.

The influence of the atomic soul can be spread all over a particular body. According to the Muëòaka Upaniñad, this atomic soul is situated in the heart of every living entity, and because the measurement of the atomic soul is beyond the power of appreciation of the material scientists, some of them assert foolishly that there is no soul. The individual atomic soul is definitely there in the heart along with the Supersoul, and thus all the energies of bodily movement are emanating from this part of the body. The corpuscles which carry the oxygen from the lungs gather energy from the soul. When the soul passes away from this position, the activity of the blood, generating fusion, ceases. Medical science accepts the importance of the red corpuscles, but it cannot ascertain that the source of the energy is the soul. Medical science, however, does admit that the heart is the seat of all energies of the body.

Lord Krishna gives further information in verse 22
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

If you want to do a bit of research, then check out Dr Ian Stevenson who was the founder of the Division of Perceptual Studies, which is a research unit of thehe Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the University of Virginia. He was (sadly he passed away on 8 Feb 2007) A Psychiatrist and studied extensively into the paranormal and particularly into children and their (alleged) ability to recall past lives. Many people who believe in the paranormal also believe that from birth everyone has psychic abilities, some stronger than others or perhaps it is more through acceptance, but as we grow and become more aware of our surroundings and what is perceived and expected as how things SHOULD be, we lose or grow out of our psychic ability. Of course there are those that maintain their awareness and perhaps that is to do with the environment in which they are raised. then again, if you do believe in reincarnation, you would also believe that a more advanced soul would have greater psychic ability. Whether you believe in it or not, it is a fascinating phenomena to research. You do have to read through a lot of crap though to find the stuff that seems to hold some profoundness.

I do hope not!

Life so far has been like hell - 67 years of it so far, so perhaps if I've made a good job of hell for 67 years I might just get a break when I die and not end up back here.

Of course, I am apprehensive that I may not have made a good job of living in hell for 67 years, so it could be that I will be sent back for a second try - but If I get a choice to come back as anything but a human, it will be as an eagle - I just love Google Earth!

I'm certainly not interested in anything like 'Second Life' - I tried flying in that and my back hurt and I spent most of the time under water!

Not sure, but how can you explain the sensation that you have just met someone you seem to have known before, or that someone appears to have an 'old soul' (ie more aware, more knowing than you would expect)? How come babies are born with exactly the same characteristics and expressions as a dead relative?

No evidence per se, but is there any evidence of consciousness? You enjoy consciousness, and you assume all other people do too, but there is absolutely no way you can tell if, for example, I am conscious. Maybe you are the only consciousness in the universe. Maybe you are the only 'first person'. Maybe the entire universe revolves around you (not literally). There is no way to prove otherwise.

There is a mass of anecdotal evidence suggesting it occurs but even those who promote the idea are careful not to suggest that there is solid scientific proof for it.

Jesus died. He remains there, unable to do anything, even go to heaven. Everything that he was gets recorded in the Book of Life. His body is destroyed to fulfill the covenant of the sacrificial lamb. Three days later, a new body is created, a spirit body designed for ascension to heaven. All that he was is downloaded into it.

Is that anything like it?

i think after watching a documentary on organ transplants that its just our genes have memories from our ancestors. our genes are exact copies of our mum and dads genes. and theirs is copies of their mums and dads and on and on. After the people who had an organ transplant many developed characteristics of their Donners. One woman who had always been tea total started drinking beer afterwards that was the first thing she wanted after the op. Here doner was a young lad who had died in a motorbike accident..
