The head, neck and face experience immediate and unfiltered pain signals sent directly to the cortex. Toothaches or other pains in this area are impossible to ignore without anesthesia or serious meditation skills.
The rest of the body actually has pain sent through a filter called the internuncial pool that can actually serve to reduce or eliminate the experience of pain. It is considered to be in our reptilian brain. Pains are only sent to the cortex for higher processing if they need attention or are more severe.
The shoulder is painful because it has a lot of sensory never fibers. It is extremely mobile and subservient to the structures below.

There Could Be MANY REASONS, have you had this seen to by a Doctor, and if no luck there A Specialist? Yes The Brain give out nerve Receptors that tell us when we have Pain,But Did you Know that Wearing the wrong type of shoes for your feet can affect your whole spine, right up to your neck?Have you Considered getting a Occupationational Therapist or Physiotherapist to check you out?5 yrs is too Long to ignore Severe Neck Pain, unless there is something physically wrong? How did your Pain begin? And have you had it investigated by Doctors-Specialists?You Need to KNOW What is causing you this Severe Pain?Only Then can you gain help for it,and if necessary go to a Reputable Pain Clinic,to Learn how to cope with it!To discover if you need Certain types of Medication for it etc. My Brother sufferes Severe Pain day & night with Severe Neck Pain,He has Damage from his feet, throughtout his Spine, and has damage to his c1 & c5 upper neck Disc, has NO Spongey layers/Mylen Sheath,to Protect these worst affected areas! This is due to Being Brutalised as a child from our adopted father as well as he has Severe Muscular Atrophy/often unable to hold his neck up.I Massage him a lot-to release the taught muscles he has left.but in most places he just has Bone/Grating on Bone.Did you have an accident? or why and what do you think started it? It is hard to help you if we do not know the facts????Can you Give some more information, before your time runs out Please! Yours Concerned starwind2012.

Do you know what is causing your pain?
My opinion--I think with the pain in the sholders, we tend to tighten those muscles more than in the lower half of the body. Tightening the muscles seem to make you much more tense and hurt worse. We even get knots of bunched nerves in the sholders and neck area. Not so much if any in the lower half.
I also have pain in both upper and lower (maybe not from the same cause) but this has been my explanation to myself. My pain seem to be helped by mild exercise, keeping those areas moving, thus working some of those knotted areas out.
Good luck.

The muscles that run along the spine are great at getting knots in them. The knots are called trigger points they make the muscles tight which puts pressure on nerves. For a possible way to get them to go away read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.

It's the use to which we put the neck. Swivelling it in all kind of akward directions all the time. And the neck technically sheaths the spinal cord and the junction of the lower brain.

Your central nerve system starts at your brain down your neck and right down your spine. So first its closer to your brain to report it. Also the use factor. Try Web MD to get some advice like comparing symptoms to get remedies.

because the neck has a lot of nerves that supply the scalp chest and the whole arm, besides you use your arm and neck more than you use your lower body.
