'coz we pronounce Australia right and therefore when abbreviated it becomes Oz! we like to shorten words... :P we hav many nicknames for our country...'stralia, down under, Oz, the best place in the world (i think i just made that one up)...

Because that's how we Aussies pronounce Australia...Oz-tralia not Awstralia. And we love to shorten things so it became Oz.

Because it's Oz-tralia ... just the sound of the name, plus it's a land unlike any other with many strange creatures (just like the fictional Oz).

i believe because we are called Aussie's which when you say it sounds like Ozzies so then you get the term oz for the country Australia.

or because we live in the emerald city with dorothy and the great wizard of oz and the wicked witch-just kidding :)
