Don't do this specifically because your boyfriend wants it. Do it only if you want to do it.
An intensive conditioner would help your hair. There are procucts which you leave on for a certain amounts of time, these sounds like your best option.
I personally use a conditioner that you spray in and leave on after washing and you don't rinse out. I find it helps enormously.
Good luck.

You can try this homeremedy. To have shiny thick hair, mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with two cups of lukewarm water. Shampoo your hair and rinse thoroughly. Use the vinegar-water mixture as a final rinse. Your hair will benefit from repeated rinsing with this mixture. This not only restores the softness and shine of your hair, but also strengthens limp hair.

If your hair is so dry no product has helped, you should consider seeing a doctor/improving your diet/taking a multivitamin and some EFA supplements daily.

probably you've already tried many things, as you say, but i still want to advise you: i like garnier fructis very much. you can get the whole pack: shampoo, condidtioner and + garnier fructis deep conditioning.
if you use them every day it should wokr, at least improve the situation.
try to use water of moderate temperature.
