The reason coal, oil and "natural" gas are called fossil fuels is that they are formed from the fossilized remains of ancient plants & animals.
With the right amount of heat and pressure (as well as a tremendous amount of time), these fossils will be converted into coal, oil, and natural gas.

A fossil is something that lived a long time ago. When it died it became buried under hundreds of layers of sand and mud which eventually turns to stone. Some of those plants and trees that lived long ago had forest fires that caused them all to die quickly. In certain circumstances the forests fell over and were buried in a special kind of mud or sand that prevented them from rotting like other vegetation. Many of these piles of veg table matter turned in coal seams and pools oil. That is why they are called fossil fuels.
