Automated call centre - it's an old trick being used by companies!

An auto dialer rings numbers in sequence and when you pick it up - it confirms the line is active - then you start getting calls asking you if you want double glazing and the like.

To stop it - sign up at the Telephone Preference Service website - this company places your number on a block list so that companies can't ring you - I did and it works fine -takes two weeks (I think) but well worth it - I don't get any nuisance calls anymore!

ADDED: forgot to mention a lot of these auto dialers are programmed to show up random numbers on phone screens - they aslo use OPERATOR a lot - to fool you into thinking it is your service operator i.e. BT , NTL calling you!

It is probably one of these dreadful sales machines that ring several numbers at once. They wait for somone to pick up and the tailenders get left with a silent line.
Purchase a phone that is capable of BTs caller display option so you have the option not to pickup or buy a loudspeaking answer machine which is a super way to reject nuisance callers. I got one for my sister in law as heavy breathers don't like being recorded. It worked!

It is probably an automated ringing system that most call centres use. Try searching the web for 'nuisance calls'...there is a site where you can block these calls.

Or better still listen to jamand!

its a call centre, its called cold calling which means a computer randomly picks your number and rings you but there is no adviser for that company available to take your call so it'll ring you until there is
