It is safer for the cat/kitten and all the passengers in the car if the cat is in a crate. I also will seat belt the cat crate for added security.
Cats can get underfoot and interfere with your ability to get to the brakes. They can block your line of vision. They can become overstimulated from the traffic sounds and panic.
I work at a humane society and I've been to accident scenes at the request of law enforcement for animal pick up. I've seen cats that have been thrown through a windshield because the cat was not secured and the owner got into a car accident. I've seen injured cats that were bouced around the car because of sudden stops.
The only time my cats are in my car is if they have a veterinary appointment and they are crated and belted in. I know how vocal they can get and how much it stresses them out so there is no way they would be uncontained!!

Yes. Would you let a child siot in a car with out a seat belt? My husbands sister got in a car accident once because the cat she had in the car got out of her grasp from her lap, and went and sat UNDERNEATH the pedals!!! Needless to say both her and the cat were harmed. And she got jail time for careless driving, and the cat was taken away due to poor pet ownership. All because of the cat roaming in the car. The cat may hate the carrier, but she'll hate the roaming more (becuz of her newly moving ground). Just be safe with yourself and the cat by keep her in the carrier. Its best all the way around.

I have taken two different cats on long trips at various times in my life and much enjoyed having them loose in the car. If the cat wants to be in the carrier, fine, and if you can't handle getting the cat out of the way when you have to, then don't let it loose. See source for most recent traveling cat. No pictures of up on dash, etc.

Car interiors were not designed to withstand cat claws. You'll end up with tears and holes in your seats as your cat scrambles to find secure footing.
Cats are quite nimble, and usually a little excitable - if your cat gets scared, there's no telling where it could end up (under your feet, on top of your head...). You're not going to be able to drive well if all of a sudden you have four sets of claws sunk into you.
It's not safe for the cat either. Please, keep it in its carrier, and if possible, belt the carrier in.

i would say yes. the last thing you need is her flying around in the car, under your feet, crying, and trying to squeeze out a window at speed.
put her in a cage or carrier, and put her on the floor of the car, so she cant see outside, and maybe direct some light aircon onto the cage, so she doesnt get too hot. also what i found to be helpfull, is a homeopathic remedy that calms them down. animals can safely use it. it just takes the edge off.

I think you should, it’s very unsafe to keep an animal like a cat in a car without a cage. They’re not like dogs, a cat would just jump at anything. They are very unpredictable.

I hate to keep my cats in the crate in the car too... but it really is the safest place for them and for you. Otherwise they can climb down under the brakes or distract you otherwise while you are driving, which isn't safe. They don't like to be in the crates, or in the car for that matter, but if they have to travel it is the best place for them to be.

Just as long someone is there to hold her still(as in how you would normally hold a cat.) then she's fine. But I don't think you should let her out if no one is there to hold her. If you got into an acident then your kittie would be hurt( or worst, considering what kind of acident and how bad it was.)

It's best to if you have to take her at all. Cats do NOT usually enjoy car rides, so it's best to leave her at home. But if you have to take her, put her in a carrier and she will feel safer
