Just dont pay. They will threaten to take action against you but if that happens just threaten to report them to the consumer council or the office of fair trading. I had a similar story and when I threatened to report them they backed off very quickly. If you still have a copy of your contract then you should be ok even if they dont back down. If they bring you to court and you win, you can claim some compensation of them. Good luck

Yes I have heard that as well about them, even taking people to court to recover the money. Personally I dont rate them, but there you go! Bit rank... you may be able to contest saying that you where not informed this was a 12 month contract etc?

They are a pain in the backside - my wife had a years membership and they rang her after 3 weeks and told her that her membership had been cancelled because she didn't attend the centre!
Well known for this type of coniving con trick - just go back and speak to the manager (nicely) and point out that all your friends hadthe same contract - they are your witnesses! Give them hell if you get no joy in the main foyer infront of alltheir customers - they soon back down!
The other thing to consider is the fact that they are allegedly in financial trouble and are trying all the tricks in the book to bring money in! I didn't tell you that!

I signed a 3 month contract with them and then cancelled it after 3 months. They let me cancel it but made me pay a month's notice cancellation fee which I was annoyed about because I had not been anyway for a month!

Funny you should write this, because Fitness First was in the news about 2 months ago for it's terrible service. I thought you were here in Australia as well, until I saw your currency as pounds. Guess they're bad over there in England as well.

a friend of mine have also encountered relatively the same contract problem. they started with a promo to lure you out in joining them but then afterwards, when you feel like quitting the gym, they would do their tricks to keep you staying in the gym. What my friend did was to cut her credit card so that they could not deduct bucks from her anymore.
