Don't ever beat a dog.
You are the owner of this dog, like a father to him. Dog's have feeling to. How would you feel if your father started bashing you.
Keep him ocupied with toys, he can't bark with toys in his mouth. Whenever the dog barks lock him in an empty, toy free room for an our or until he stops barking.
And NEVER abuse your dog. Abusing a dog can cause bad dog behaviour such as biting, attacking etc. If your dog attacks a baby or an elder or anyone for that matter you will be held liable and the will most probably be put to sleep.
Good luck

Well....I hope you're not serious about the beating.

Anyways....you need to learn why the dog is barking so you can remove that factor.

Outside dogs typically bark at small animals of the night.

I would probably reccomend a bark collar called JetAir to try and assist.

If you're father is looking at shooting the dog, should I then understand that he wouldn't have the dog in the house because that would stop the barking.

If you can't handle this situation and you can't afford a behaviourist then I would reccomend you hand this dog in for rehoming at your local no-kill animal shelter.

Understanding Your Dog

Barking is a natural form of behaviour for a dog. A dog that barks to give warning of an intruder or a danger, or to communicate his joy to his master, is simply expressing his emotional state. However, if your dog forms the habit of barking at the slightest external provocation, this behaviour becomes distressing. Not only to you, obviously, but also to your dog, which gets into a more or less constant state of excitement and becomes unable to concentrate on other activities. When barking becomes excessive, it is therefore necessary gently to re-train your dog.

We all have the right to live with a pet. However, we are responsible for making sure that our companion is not a nuisance to others. Imagine, for a moment, what our neighbours must feel when they are subjected to incessant noise from a dog: elderly people who have a rest during the day, students who need to concentrate to prepare for examinations. These problems can sometimes grow so serious that the owner has no option but to get rid of his dog. To prevent things from reaching this stage, and solve the problems as soon as they arise, 'Dynavet' have designed a unit that safely and painlessly encourages your dog not to bark.

Sometimes giving the dog a tennis ball will keep it quiet, until he loses it.... A doggie treat might calm it down.

Also, show the dog(if he is barking from a sound he heard) that there is nothing to worry about, show it outside or whatever it was that made the noise.

Really, there is no sure way to shut a dog up.

Well... first of all, try to find the cause...
Is there a stranger, is he new to the neighborhood, is he angry or he just needs a playmate?

Try walking him/her around the neighborhood for some days, also try distracting him/her with toys. Remember, to stop pets from wanting more, always do a gradual withdrawal. Example: Walk the dog 4-5 times a week, then next week just thrice, then twice, this way the dog wouldn't be asking for more.

If problem still persists, consult your vet, the dog might be sick.

Forget all those previous answers, they're useless. Get a tape recorder and record his bark for about half an hour, then at night play it back just loud enough for him, but not you and your family to hear and out of his reach. Ensure that the tape will reverse continuously i.e. keep on playing back until morning. As you rise, turn it off until next evening. He'll be listening to that tape all night without a sound coming from him.And don't worry now about his silence, for this too will keep you awake. Enjoy your sleep and do let me know how you fare.

BRING YOUR DOG INSIDE! Your dog is most likely barking because he's cold! (Or lonely, or needs water, or just needs some damn attention.)
