I love this question.. as most people do not use the mind given to them for what ever reason.. global warming as a man made cause is not happening...

at one time the earth was covered in ice... we called it the ice age... as the ice retreated the temp slowly came up.. with less ice.. the faster the temps come up..

remember at one time. the earth had NO ice caps.. so the earth as a living thing.. grows and goes in and out of stages.. or cycles

there is nothing.. humans can do to change the earth..
the earth has lost the very air we breathe a few time.. something like 5 to 9 times in its history.... it has had a few 100 ice ages... and it had no people on it...

ask yourself some basic questions.. like

1 if the earth had no people on it.. why did it have the 1st ice age when it was a jungle swampy earth?

once in the ice age... why did it come out...

cycles.. just like your body the earth has them.. they are just very far apart for us... million of years apart..
think about this.. lets say the earth and humans are on the earth a million years from now... and the earth is headed towards an ice age... what do you think the wackos will be saying then,,, " OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!! we humans have caused the earth to go into an ice age... "
when all along it would happen if people exsisted or not..
earth is alive today... some day it will die... be reborn.. and die again. and the cycle will keep going.. long after there are no records of people... you can try this at home... take a glass of ice... place it in the fridge... and wait... the ice will melt.. and the temp in the glass will come drop.... at first.. but with less ice.. the will start to rise.. and as the ice is all but gone the temp will move up... which is more or less what happen to earth. we are in another cycle. it has little to do with people.. I remember back in the 70's we had all the science in... it was a FACT... the earth was heading for an ice age.. we had the same jack-tards running around screaming " OH MY GOD!!!!!! GLOBAL COOLING"
now we know those people.... are wackos... and in 30 years.. we will look at all the wackos and say.. you people are stupid.. but.. because people are short minded.... they will have by then brought back Global cooling or something else to take its place

Global warming is at the fore front because politicians found how to use a new platform to get re-elected. The world leaders use it because they found ways to make money at it. This is a made up problem just like Global Cooling in the 1970's. Wake up people. I agree we need to be more efficient with our resources, and we should fine and jail companies who are dumping into our rivers maliciously. I want to stop the raiforest destruction, but to say that global warming is a serious man made issue and we need to destroy the American economy and bow down to the rest of the world certainly does not float my boat. Follow the money on this one and you will see that it is all for political gain and grant money for those scientists who profit off of the government if global warming stays at the front of the issues. Look deep into the Keoto (sp?) Treaty, first of all they took jets to a non-central resort location. Not very environmentally concious. THen in the parameters of the treaty they have a clause that makes it so you can buy or sell polution credits. This is all about shifting wealth and breaking down the United States. This is painfully obvious, just look at peoples agenda. The earth's mean temperature has risen .6 degrees C in the past 125 years. Greenland's icecaps have gotten colder in the past 10 years. The Scientists who do not gain anything on their posisition will tell you that the earth has a natural progression and this is what we are seeing. The UN report is made up of POLITICIANS not a good spread of scientists. THere are as many or more scientists who believe that man in NOT the reason and it is over hyped, but their voice is not heard in the LIberal Mainstream Media. This issue is 99% political, and an attempt to make the USA a socialist nation, and eventually communisim. WAKE UP AMERICA, IT IS TIME TO BE AMERICANS. FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE. STOP THE LIES

There is very good evidence about how the ice ages were timed based on the natural movements of the sun in its orbits and the position of the continents due to tectonic plate movement.

To learn about these matters you can look up "milankovitch cycles" - these cycles are well established and there is really no argument or controversy about them at all.

The real point is, that when there have been major climate shifts in the ancient past, they have taken place over many thousands of years. Global climate change today is taking place literally before our eyes, as numerous reports from the Arctic have confirmed... down to little details like the cancellation of ice-fishing tournaments in the USA due to lack of ice!!! Things are happening 100 to 1000 times as fast as in the past and there is abundant evidence to show that it is caused by humans, as the IPCC reports.

matt is on the ball with this one. you have to look atthe pure data, get away from the political BS and the heated opinions. the data tells us thatthe earth in Geological time has gone through many many climate shifts, when the mean temp has gone up or it has gone down. the whole point is that the "natural" climate shifts have been soo gradual that you have to study thousands of years at a time. What we are seeing now is a trend in which the "natural" warming trend, rather than taking thousands of years is happening very quicky(in geological terms). it is still an ongoing process. it is gradual in human time terms but as far asthe planet and its time table, things are moving pretty quickly. we have noticed significant changes in just 100 years.

Humans activities definitely has speed up the global warming. There are other factors that also contributed to global warming, such as ; variation in the sun's energy output, vulcanism, variations in Earth's orbit (Milankovitch cycles), position of the continents and changes in Earth's atmosphere.

ok...I will attempt to answer your question as briefly as I possibly can but please note that will be very brief, it is far more complex but I will outline the main points for you to read and hopefully search for the evidence yourself and agree with me.

ice ages -past/present

bear in mind I'm talking about global mean temperatures, not regional fluctuations as you read

ok, we are currently in the interglacial period of the current ice-age....this started around 10,000 years ago and is expected to replaced by a glacial period (evidence from previous climate patterns and not taking into account the current rises in co2 levels in the atmosphere) ...during this time (last 10,000 years) the global mean temperatures have varied by up to 1 degrees Celsius...from around 1600 to 1850, it is generally accepted that a combination of changes in the solar constant and variations in volcanic aerosols accounts for the variations in global mean temperatures...from 1850-present, co2 is by large the main important culprit

prior to 1600, the variations are thought largely to be attributed to changes in the solar constant and variations in volcanic aerosols but climatologists have not ruled out that other factors may be equally important...

ok, going further back in time...there are four important contributing factors that have affected global climate, they are:

the changes in the Earths orbit around the sun and the tilt of its rotation axis(thought to be the primary cause of recorded major changes over several million years) - these changes alter the latitudinal and seasonal distribution of solar radiation....for example...say the tilt of the Earth is very large, both polar regions receive no solar radiation in the winter, but receives large amounts of solar radiation in the summer, leading to an even higher yearly average amount of solar radiation than if the tilt was smaller - this increase in solar radiation would explain the retreat of the ice-caps....

conversely, the reverse would occur if the tilt was smaller

if the planetry albedo increases or decreases(that is the amount of Earth that is covered in snow/ice) either more radiation will be reflected back into space, or more will be absorbed, thus leading to either a warming or a cooling.

oceans and continents in the past (heights of mountain ranges, distribution of continents, shapes of ocean floors and wind on ocean currents)

changes in solar luminosity and changes in atmospheric composition play important roles in the distant past changes in climate

As I mentioned earlier, the most important recent cause of global mean temperatures rising is the co2 content in the atmosphere...there has been a year on year increase since the dawn of industry and is expected to rise even further, thus causing the major impact that we have been witnessing on the greenhouse effect

scientists have ruled out natural causes as being the PRIMARY cause of these rises, and due to the fact that the rises coincide with the dawn of industry, it seems plausable then, that humans are the DOMINANT cause of these rises (recent reports by the IPCC have shown this to be the case)

When you look at the natural carbon cycle/water cycle (the two main greenhouse gases) you will see and appreciate just how much we have influenced those otherwise natural cycles and how significant slight changes have on these cycles on our climate

again bear in mind, I'm not talking about regional fluctuations that occur everywhere year on year, I'm talking about global mean temperatures that disrupt those regional weather patterns!

EDIT:

global dimming is a known occurrence, and if you do some research, you will find that it is not a paradox, it merely masked the presence of global warming!

I believe that this is just the life cycle of the earth and there are too many alarmists out there, somehow we will adapt...its not the end of the world, rather a new beginning.
