During 1800s, Anthropologists had a problem as to how
to classify human beings. One resercher proposed the
expression "intelligent animal". After advanced studies
on monkeys, it was dropped. Another reseacher proposed
"tool using animal". After observing some animals
making wooden tools and sharpening them with knife like
stones, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"weapon using animal". A decade ago, a rare film was
shot in African forests. One short monkey was hit very
badly by a big monkey. The short monkey prepared a
wooden knife using stones and hid it on the top of a
tree. After some days, when the big monkey came to
attack the short monkey, it ran up to the tree for the
weapon it has hid and killed the big monkey. The one
thing that the anthropologists found with any group of
human beings, even if they did not have contacts with
the out side world for thousands of years, is
spirituality with some form of religion. So, man is a
"spiritual animal" if you want to call him that way.
"Manush" (human) was so named because he has "Manas" a
mind higher than that of the animals which realises the
divinity in creation. It was present since the creation
of human beings. Religion is the characteristic feature
of most of the human beings. It is as eternal and
and as unchanging as the Almighty.

It has been there forever and a day, look in the times of jesus you got people predicting things, philosophers etc.Joan of ark was inspired by god ,there as been numerous people in this life who have had the gift but just did not know what it was.The old mediums years ago brought the religion about what they now call spiritualism.I would say that it as always been there as we all have a spirit body that leaves at the time of death,it is just that people did not know or understand it much then.

It started when people (psychics, mediums) started having knowledge of other lives than their own. And people realized hey we are all connected by spirit made in God image. God is not fleshly but a spirit and so by making us all in his image we have a little of his essence. We also know that God has MYRIADS upon Myriads of Angels. And we know that some family members or friends that may die still are around us. So we pray for these spirits to be happy and for God to continue guiding them in their other life, and helping us by sending us his heavenly helpers (angels) in our path to learn our life lessons until we are reincarnated and have to learn others/some more.
The belief was wide spread due to some key people like Allen Kardec who although French was also known to travel through Europe and study mediums and psychics. To further see if there was something to their "gift". And being a man of science himself and a skeptic found it fascinating and real. There fore he wrote many books and held many seances.

it seems awfully similar to shamanism, except spiritualist don't use bits of dead animals or get out of their heads on naturally occurring hallucinogenics. they both, supposedly conjure up the spirits of the ancestors though. it probably started no long after homo sapiens first became conscious. a way of consoling and explaining the death of loved ones. also it's money for old rope and it always has been.

Spiritualism existed as far back as humans existed. Ancient man worshipped god for benefits in hunting, farming, rains, lightning etc. God was both fearsome, and someone to respect, and someone to beg for favours. Man was never self dependent. He always projected his fears and wishes, and depended on a god, who was invisible and invincible.

Spirit soul is the eternal person living in the temporary body and takes up another temporary body upon the destruction of the old body. Spiritualism is to do with the spirit soul which is was never started because it is called as Sanatana Dharma, for it has no beginning or end. It is eternal. The very word, Sanatana means that which has no beginning or end and therefore, Sanatana Dharma is by definition is eternal religion. It is based on the Vedas, which literally means knowledge. Veda also called as Sruti(that which is heard) is coming down since time immemorial through the chain of disciplic succession from guru to disciple. Vedas or Sruti were handed down through aural reception and the same thing was written down around 5000 years back. Nobody can trace out the history of Sanatana Dharma because it never got started.
But, in human history various teachings have been given known by various names.
With the teachings of God to Abraham and Moses, Judaism began around 4,500 years back.
Buddhism began with the birth of Lord Buddha around 2500 years ago.
With the birth of Jesus Christ around 2000 years,Christianity began.
With the birth of Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) around 1300 years back the Holy Al' Quran came in to existence.
Sanatana Dharma or the eternal religion based on the Vedas, eternal but in written format-5000 years back
Judaism as is seen today - 4500 years back
Buddhism with the advent of Lord Buddha - 2500 years
Jainism around the same period as that of Buddhism
Christianity with the birth of Lord Jesus Christ- 2000 years
Islam with the birth of ProphetMohammed(pbuh) - 1300 years
God is one only, irrespective of the religion being Christianity, Islam, Hinduism etc... God sends His different sons or representatives or prophets and gives through them much information about God consciousness, at different times in various places. According to the limitations of some particular places and knowledge of the persons present the knowledge about the God various degrees.
People become more and more materialistic with the progress of external glamor forgetting the spiritual knowledge. Therefore, the later religions contain the knowledge of God with fewer information. The lesser knowledge about the God, the adherents of that faith tend to be more narrow minded. The more the knowledge about God, the practitioners have a complete understanding in a broader perspective.
The Vedas being eternal was written down around 5000 years back can be compared to an encyclopedia has a broader understanding of God. Whereas, around 2000 years back Christianity came into existence with Jesus Christ has fewer information about God came be compared to a pocket dictionary.
Therefore, it is not surprising to see the difference between a pocket dictionary and encyclopedia.
Introduction to Bhagavad-gita-As-It-Is, by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of ISKCON.
Yet man professes to belong to a particular type of faith with reference to particular time and circumstance and thus claims to be a Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist or any other sect. Such designations are non-sanatana-dharma. A Hindu may change his faith to become a Muslim, or a Muslim may change his faith to become a Hindu, or a Christian may change his faith and so on. But in all circumstances the change of religious faith does not effect the eternal occupation of rendering service to others. The Hindu, Muslim or Christian in all circumstances is servant of someone. Thus, to profess a particular type of sect is not to profess one’s sanatana-dharma. The rendering of service is sanatana-dharma.
Factually we are related to the Supreme Lord in service. The Supreme Lord is the supreme enjoyer, and we living entities are His servitors. We are created for His enjoyment, and if we participate in that eternal enjoyment with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we become happy. We cannot become happy otherwise. It is not possible to be happy independently, just as no one part of the body can be happy without cooperating with the stomach. It is not possible for the living entity to be happy without rendering transcendental loving service unto the Supreme Lord.
