The lens on the Canon S2 doesn't have a screw thread to attach filters or additional lenses directly. What you need first, is an adaptor (hollow tube) that attaches to the body of the camera that slides over the fixed lens, eventually providing a 58 mm thread for further attachments. So it's 58, not 52.
Canon also makes official adaptors, as well as several add-on lenses for the S2:
LAH-DC20 lens adapter
TC-DC58B 1.5× teleconverter lens
WC-DC58 0.75× wide-angle converter
500D close-up lens (for macro shots)

If it is a Canon Powershot S2, the difference is for the width of the lens(see attached). The lens on the left is a bit wider and would be 58mm, while the one on the right is a bit narrower at 52mm. I always get clear filters to protect the glass of the actual lens. If the clear filter gets scratched, it costs $12-18, if the lens gets scratched, you'll need a new camera.
