I want to thank a Surgeon who successfully performed a very dangerous operation on my dad. Was thinking of giving a gift, like a bottle of wine, but my brother-in-law (also a surgeon) says it would not be neccessary as the surgeon was only doing a job..Is he right?

I would not worry about a gift, but a card thanking him would be wonderfully appropriate.

What a lovely thought. Perhaps a nice basket of fruit with a card saying thank you would be more, dare I say it "politically correct". That way he could also share it with his team, staff or even family (inc kids).

Yes I suppose he is doing his job but too many of us take things and people for granted these days. A simple token of your appreciation would mean so much to the surgeon - makes his job more worthwhile I reckon.

Hope your Dad makes a full recovery

Good luck

Surgeons are by the very nature of their work, held very dear to the relatives of someone they have treated , as in your case. It is easy and true to say it is their job and that is what they are paid to do, in the same way that I pay the decorater to paint my house. However, the decorator makes a mistake in his job and he just does it again, not so with a surgeon, sometimes he cannot do the job again. So I say yes, do give him a small `disposable` present like wine, but most of all an appreciative note of thanks, everyone likes to know and feel that they are appreciated.

i think you are a very nice person and i think your idea is absolutely wonderful! why not send a thank you? just think how much you like being thanked! and yes he was doing his job but still people appreciate knowing how you feel.
so, go for it! a nice bottle of wine, or if he specializes in a certain area, [heart, kidney, lung, cancer], you could make a donation to that cause, [i.e. heart & stroke, cancer society], in his name. he wouldn't know the amount of the donation, but the society sends a card to him advising him that you have made a donation in his honor.
so, with all due respect to your brother, you go ahead and make this surgeon's day a little more special.
s.b.
p.s.: don't forget the surgical team, ask him to pass your thanks to them as well! or you could send a quick email to the hospital administrator asking them to thank the team on your behalf!

I do think that it would be nice to send a card but please please
send it to the team that performed the whole operation for without them all then the operation would not have taken place. also it would be nice if the Surgeon could show it around to those who worked with him to show that someone also recognised them for their efforts.
Don't forget when sending the card to put who was operated on and on what date and type of operation due to the fact that some surgeons work with different teams for different operations & on different days.
Hope that is of some help

Of course he's only doing his job but I'm sure he would love a bottle of Chateau Nerf De Pap (awful spelling sorry!). Oh and don't forget the theatre team. He couldn't have done it without them! Maybe a card for him and ask him to pass on the chocs to his team then he knows you appreciate the bigger picture. Just a suggestion.

If it were my dad i'd say "Dad dad you're alive",then I would talk to him a long time. Eventually the surgeon will accept the fact that he has saved a life and he would be naturaly gifted.

Yes, it is not necessary to give him a gift as it is his job. It would be nice though, but trust me, the amount he is getting paid from doing the surgery is enough to buy the bottle of wine or whatever else you had in mind to buy him;-)

Well a lot of people do there job 'right' but it doesn't mean their untouchable by a few words of thanks. It's always nice to get positive feedback and aren't the medical profession absolutely amazing anyway? Everyday the save so many lives and yet the pay is so out of proportion to say footballers for instance.... do it!

A card would be appreciated. He would probably enjoy a good bottle of wine as well, but what about the whole team? Maybe some posh chocolates to share.

What would really go down well, is a fund-raising effort for the hospital.

My sister is a doctor and she does not get many gifts, but she always comments when she gets a note or a card thanking her for saving someones life or giving them great care. Sometimes doctors forget that the patients have families and people who love them and it is nice to be reminded that you not only helped one person, but an entire family. So, I think a card expressing your gratitude and what it means to you would be nice.
