Prayer is how we connect with God. It's like communicating with your husband or wife. If you don't talk, you don't have much of a relationship.

There is a God's plan that says, more or less, "YOU WILL COME BACK TO ME REFINED." This cannot be changed. However, how and when you return to God is determined by the choices you make daily.
There is always a right and a not-so-right choice in every situation. These situations are nothing but challenges (similar to the 'problems' your Maths teacher would give you to strengthen your knowldge of the subject) deliberately strewn accross your way to refine you. If the essence of your prayer therefore is to enable you pick right choices everytime, then your journey back home to God will be easier than when you pray to have the challenges removed.

Everything has already been pre-destined. In the Christian faith our names are already (or not) in the Book of Life. But, we still have to live out our lives. It can be compared to a drive from one end of a country to the next. Not all the roads on the map will be opened or passable due to either construction roadblocks or weahter, or accidents of some sort. So you will have to find an alternate route. But in the long run, if all goes as planned, you will arrive at your destination. You can't give up on your efforts to get there and take for granted that you would by some means of osmosis. Life still has to be lived, and the effort still has to be made in pursuit of the quality of your life. Prayer to God is a petition, and plea for various reasons. It's like asking someone for directions to the main road. If you don't want to put forth the effort to find your way, then you might as well stay put in the driveway of your home. Prayers are always answered in God's time, not our's because He already has the answers. It's beyond our own comprehension and understanding how He truly operates. Just trust Him. You'll find your way.

Your prayer is from your heart. Further You must have to understood the fact that God is present in our heart. This can be realised in meditation. Further we are the creation of our own destiny. As per Hindu sacred religion, we carry all good and bad deeds life after life. There is no end unless we pray for unification of self with the divineliness.
Hence there is always a possible way to complete mergence with God in this life by a simple and wonderful meditation

Postulating that there is such a being for the sake of argument: Isn't it presumptuous on our behalf, with a life span as a species of a few thousand years to a few million years (depending if you go with religion or science) of existence and with life spans that are measured in a few tens of years, to know the plan of this eternal being? Time wise our existence is close to zero. And yet we know the PLAN???? does this sound logical. God will change the plan of the universe because we pray. WE!!!! and we are??

We all have free will, and although God has a plan to get us out of the mess we're in, there's lot's of things that we can pray for. The good things that we recieve and we can pray for God's help when problems come up.
James 1:13-15
13Â When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. 14Â But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. 15Â Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.
James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, for it comes down from the Father of the [celestial] lights, and with him there is not a variation of the turning of the shadow.

First of all, I pray that those goofy ads for "23" disappear soon, because they're driving me nuts! :-)
I don't think of prayer as a kind of request line to God. I think of it as "conversation," and it usually goes through various streams (as conversations do), from gratitude to expression of concerns, sorrow, etc.
Also, I think there is a divine plan, but I think we (God's children) are active participants in that plan -- that we're not simply moved around like pegs on a board -- because otherwise, that would negate our free will.
So, I think prayer for change can create a positive force for change through a consensus of feelings among many people.

Prayer is not to change God, and why would any human being want to change God who is all knowing, and merciful and loving. Anyone who thinks they know better than God should never be the one deciding the fate of the world. Prayer is for us to get to know the mind of God so that we can pray according to His will. Even Jesus prayed, 'Not My will, but Thine be done."
