I never believe in the theory that soul dies with our body...although I am very much against religions I do echo them when it comes to the ever-existence of soul....having said that, since soul lives forever, there must be a process, long or short, for a soul to realize the fact that the body it once lives in is dead. So this leads to my Q, when a person, or a soul to be exact, knows he/she is actually dead..of course, I mean the body.

i believe they know even before death in some cases
many people have reported seeing their loved ones come to them to take them home
so i do not believe it comes as such a shock to them when they do die
but if they do not have this experience , then i believe it would be immediatly after
i do not believe death of the body will be a shock to us at all when we realise that our spirit is perfect and without physical hurts
my dad has came to me both personally and through others
he told me that he is so light , so unburdened.... that death is beautiful

I think the spirit/soul knows that the physical function of the body has ended when the spirit decides it can no longer create the identity of the body. When one ceases to create, there is nothingness.

I think it must relate to the way you die, but maybe you never really know, maybe we are dead, maybe there is no such thing as life, we just think there is. We are just dead people dreaming...
(in other words, i don't know and anything is possible...)
I think Pangel's got a point there, I have wondered about that too, like you will wake up one day and you will just know something is going to happen.

If you are dead, you are not alive.
If you are not alive, you will not be thinking.
Only living things think. How many dead people do you know that are thinking right now, how will I know if I am dead?
Dead do not think. They are simply, dead.
If you do not want to die, just find a way to keep moving forever under your own power somehow. I think, as long as your moving, they can't call you dead yet.
