This can be due to a number of reasons...all listed in in the other answers, eg to hot/to stiff etc....but a suggestion to combat this is to place a small ovenproof dish in the bottom of your oven with some water in it...this allows moisture to flow around the oven during the cooking process, keep an eye on the water but it only need to be a inch or so deep..

It's all the gas escaping as the cake rises, it forces it's way out through the dough which gets harder the longer it's in the oven. If it's stopping you from icing or decorating your cakes make a little more cake mixture then use a bread knife to slice the cake level across the top.

Alot of your stoves of today made rather it be electric or gas still have a marginal amount of uneven heating going on inside the ovens. Notice at a resturant when they bake sheet cakes and such in those hobart type convection ovens the cakes dont tend to do that. Its becuase of a evenly dispersed amount of heat properly cooking the cake. I wish i could afford one.

In my experience, cracking occurs when the cake spends too much time baking at too high a temperature. the tempreture must be 180 degrees and when you insert a screwer and it comes out clean never leave the cake in the hot oven.good luck and cheers

I experienced that when the batter is too stiff. Add some more water/oil to the batter and it should help. Make sure the over pre heating is done correctly too.
