It has been my unpleasant experience with ultra-aggressive religious demonstrators that they prefer their "life answers" in the simplest terms possible; simple black and white, right and wrong, the Bible sez, etc.

Most all humans have a certain need for group acceptance, and these ultra-aggressive, ultra-conservative "believers" found their comfort amongst others who shared their level of fervency, led by rather flamboyant, charismatic "pastor" who would "lead them into battle" against the world's sinners.

I don't think that these folks were comfortable if they had to entertain/consider more than two options for any problem. They didn't like shades of gray.

Unfortunately for them, in the real world, there are often more than just two options to any situation, and sometimes none of them stand out as shining examples of "the Bible sez." Sometimes, you have to actually use the brain you were given.

I am reminded of an excellent episode of the cartoon series,"South Park," where the townsfolk convinced Jesus to get God to appear at this outdoor concert.

He appeared, and told the people (paraphrasing),"Look...I can't be called upon to work out every little piddly problem you people have; sometimes you have to work things out for yourself."

I never pestered my earthly father for every little problem I had; he probably would have told me to use my head and figure it out.

I think the same analogy applies to the heavenly father.

Why would they fear making their own decisions? They make their decisions based on their belief, but in any case it is still their own decision...and it is nothing to be afraid of. It's like saying scientists fear making decisions on their own...which doesn't make sense because both religion and science provide a set of guidelines to help make a GOOD decision.

Are you married? Do you fear making really big decisions without discussing it with your spouse? In everyday decisions I know the nature and character and Word of my God...but big decisions I pray over and search the Word for direction. I don't "fear" making any decision on my "own" as you put it but I respect my God and I trust His Word so to prevent my future from being adversely affected, I talk to Him about it. The nice thing is that He is as close as my very heart beat and loves to discuss things with me. Listening to Him saves me a world of grief!

to have fear in living for God in Christian faith, is basically not having absolute trust in that God will care and love you throught your decisions. if we truly love God and trust God, then we should already have an indication of what to consider when making a decision. if your faith is strong and true then you should fear nothing. and regardless, your never alone making those decisions. whether they are good ones or bad, he's there in your presence. i'm actually curious as to what inspired you to ask such a question. just curious that's all i don't want to judge.

I guess that would depend upon the religion and the independence of the individual. Yes there are some faiths that tell its followers that the first "sin" was knowledge but then there are also faiths that embrace knowledge and free thinking. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that some religions try to force its own sense of morality with regards to making a decision.

Without consulting scripture, or meditation, or asking the wise counsel of others, is it smart to just arbitrarily make a decision on your own?

No I always decide for myself things. For instance earlier I decided to clean up the soda I spelled on the tv. Then a minute ago I decided on my own to tease my birds. Then I decided on my own to answer this question. Are we very different, you and I?
