You have had several good answers but why did they call themselves the "Watch Tower" society? It is essentially from scripture where we are told to be a watchman on the wall to warn of danger. However, think of what watchtowers are used for today. They are used to keep people IN! The members of this society are told to warn US of danger but never never to listen to our side. If they do, they could be disfellowshiped or thrown out of "the kingdom" (or at least the kingdom halls. Didn't Jesus warn us that one would follow HIM.....they would be thrown out of the synagogue (churches or kingdom halls today)
We are not to follow religions or any denominations. We are to be followers of JESUS CHRIST. The Watchtower also gives FIVE things you must do to have everlasting life. The BIBLE gives us ONE. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

The watch tower society is the society that publishes the propoganda of the cult known as the Jehovahs Witnesses

The WT bible and tract society was an organization founded around the turn of the century by Charles Russell. It is the official name of the organization commonly known as Jehovah's Witnesses. It's main office in Brooklyn, known to them as Bethel (house of God)is where they print their religious books magazines etc.
Although they have some strange interpretations of the Bible and religious ideas, they are not a cult, and although they spread a lot of religious propaganda, they at leasttry to live by the teachings of the bible, which includes preaching to others.
