My brother in law just got a new tattoo, and the tat seems to be scabbing up fine, but the scab seems to be drawing out the ink. He has had the tat touched up by a different tattoo artist, thinking maybe it was the person whom did it, but the second one has done the same thing. Is there any reason for this?

A lot of scabbing is not normal for a healing tattoo. When the fluids that accumulate on top of a fresh tattoo are washed off, all that should occur is an eventual peeling of the damaged epidermis that contains ink.

Excessive bleeding with and after a tattoo can be caused by thinning the blood by drinking alchohol, taking aspirin, etc., which is why it is not advised prior to or during a tattoo. This alone can cause heavy scabbing.

How exactly is the scab drawing up ink from your perspective? Do you feel the scabbing is pulling ink out of the dermis before it gets a chance to heal in? Typically, when the peeling takes place, what you are seeing is not the end result. It takes more time for that fresh epidermis to have its normal transparent qualities to properly see the tattoo that is in the dermis.

Just keep up with the aftercare instructions provided by the artist and wait at least two weeks after healing to make any determination as to the final outcome.

If the colors that are fading are purple or certain reds, then it is possible your brother in law is reactive to mercury compounds, which these colors are based upon. I have this problem, too. If it is other colors that are fading, there are several possibilities. He may have a low grade allergy to particular ink(s). Or, the tattoo did not go in deep enough. Since he's had more than one artist work on it, this is a slim possibility. I suspect his body is rejecting the ink for some reason. Another thought: if the artists who worked on him are not professionals, there is a chance the inks used were vegetable dyes that the body simply absorbed as nutrients. He might want to consider checking with a dermatologist to see if he has adverse reaction to the chemistry of the tattoo inks. Tell him to get small samples of the inks that keep fading, to take in for testing.

wrong, you can drink and take meds during and after a tat and sorry but ink doesn't "draw" out. yes you can have an allergic reaction to red ink but it is more serious than the ink pushing out. his skin could just be one of the types that don't take well to the abuse a tattoo puts on it. also if it is scabbing, he is doing something wrong in the aftercare. it should be peeling if any scabs at all. only use A&D ointment on it. rub it in like lotion. do not over expose to water especially salt water or chlorinated pool water. the guy may have just gone too deep, but most likely your bro in law just is not moisturizing it often enough and it dries out which causes a scab. the scab tightens up the skin to pull the wound closed. this stretches the freshly tattooed skin which rips and causes scar tissue. the ink is still there it is just underneath such a thick scarit cannot be seen. if he scarred bad the first time, the touchup will only make it worse. lube it up and keep it that way. let it heal.

The only time I had a problem with this is with red, and I am allergic to it, and it caused VERY painful swelling, pus, and HUGE scabbing, and some of the ink did pull away, but that is only with red, no other color. And I am talking PAINFUL, like I was unable to move my arm for close to a week

At no point during the healing process of a tattoo should there be a scab. He should be keeping it moisturized enough, with A & D ointment and later unscented lotion, that it never scabs,

Tell him to only use a non scented lotion on the tattoo.
He also should not be consuming alcohol, or taking any medication.

Any of the above could be why his fresh tattoo is doing that. And.. tell him to not pick the scab!

Also, wanted to tell you, if the ink is red that seems to be drawing out, it maybe his body rejecting it. Their is a certain chemical in red ink that some people have a hard time accepting.

it's just healing.....is he keeping is moisturized and washed properly? still, i think it's just healing, all of mine have done the same thing. give it proper healing time, around 2 weeks depending on the tattoo size. i wouldn't worry about it. what has to happen before it's healed is, all that skin needs to fall away and new skin needs to replace it, so it will look like royal hell for a little while.
