Some Muslim leaders have states that each time the Koran mentions jihad, it is simply one's struggle with themselves, not an external struggle with non-Muslims.

Which is true?

It is merely a struggle with the Self. Terrorists have endeavored to malign this religion's name by spreading this lie and making it synonymous with their version of "Holy War" (And they have done a splendid job of it too).
I don't blame you for being confused but I can assure you it means struggle and it starts with purifying the self of sin. Even writing about religion, clearing misconceptions is Jihad.
But the murder of innocent people is murder for which I cannot think of a severe enough punishment. (Families who have lost loved ones to this unholy war have come to hate Islam because of these inhuman animals... and as a muslim I can understand that).
Just imagine, if this were its inherent meaning, EVERY muslim on the face of earth would be killing non-muslims left and right.
Cheers and God bless.

The blogbaba enjoyed the answers as well and even gave Mahal and Muslim Rose a thumbs up, no one denies the beauty of the first half of the Koran. Your responses where informative and truly a joy to read. Unfortunately the world is not always as just (Mahal) or as beautiful (M.R.) as you guys. Rarely are things as they should be, and I grieve for what has been done to a faith such as yours. Thank you for the education, I have lived among Arabs (of several faiths, not just Muslim) for almost 50 years, and have never seen such purity expressed more eloquently before.

Peace to you and yours, and God bless.

Jihad is a personal struggle with oneself but also include defensive battle against attackers. Like mis understood by some nonmuslims it is not a all out struggle against non-muslims. because we are to respect those who are not fighting with us

"60: 8. Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice."

a small percentage of muslims, beautiful, misconstrue to the point of violence,.whether hindu, christian, jew,or irreligious, most people look for those faith ideas that validate human existence in the realm of god,and reinforce natural drives in daily activities.Men tend toward honesty in work, providing for family, and education,if possible, and leaving their children in a better state,in'sh'allah. And when they meet the creator after this existence is done with and god has told them 'good job' then they can say,"allah mish'wa qainah"to construe the other guy properly is an imperative, and maybe this internet is more a help than a hinderance ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,in'sh'allah

It depends on the personal interpretation..
the true interpretation is ofcourse a personal struggle..
But then you get those extreme losers that have taken the word and used it as an excuse to kill...

Good Question btw.. ;)

fairly probably. evaluate the fanaticism of a few Muslim states and their want to erect a caliphate or to deliver Shariah regulation to go back Western international locations. to guard democratic establishments and finished freedom of speech in Western countires, I do imagine some elements of the West (including average Muslims) would ought to wrestle hostile to the more beneficial radical kinds of Islam. I basically desire that it will likely be remoted to small communities or places, and that i'm hoping that our center jap allies (at the moment allies in the "conflict on terror") will be keen to placate the insanity in the previous it receives to that aspect. i fairly desire that conflicts will be delivered to a standstill and that persons will basically come across approaches to stay and enable stay. there is not any want for more beneficial conflict, and that i have no want to revive the conflicts of the twentieth century.

I guess it's the same as other passages in the Bible that are interpreted differently depending on which church you attend.

Unfortunately, there are two ways of interpreting any book:

1) According to what it actually says
2) According to what you need it to say

I think the murdering slugs in Islam choose the second option, while there are countless private citizens struggling with the first and getting a bad name.

Yes, Jihad is simply one's struggle in themselves,

the only time it's an external struggle is in times of war ONLY if the other side attack us and we retaliate because of self defence, that is external jihad and only exclusive to that time.
