A discourse, as I understand it, stands for a reasoned talk and discussion on any subject. It generally implies that the speaker is quite knowledgeable or an expert on the subject, involves the active participation of the audience in the discussion, followed by questions and answers.
Nowadays, 'discourse' is used in relation to religious subjects, but it can be on any subject, as long as there is a logical, persuasive and well-reasoned talk, and there is good interaction between the speaker and the listeners.
