I have had a ten unit for about 8 years. It provides some diversion by providing a small shock, don't worry it is only a small tingling sensation and totally controlable by you. It has either two or four leads that use a sticky patch about the size of a half dollar.
You place the a/b and or d/c patches across you pain spot. It doesn't really stop the pain it is just a diversion. Some people have better luck thanI did.
If yo have been to physical therapy they probably used a large one on you. If not it is no big deal.

My mom used to use the Tens Unit. It is a little box about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide. It has one master wire that is connected to the unit, and wires that are connected to the main wire. The branching wires have that circle thing on the end that you put gel on, like when they shock your heart they tape those round things to you, or when you have a surgery they tape them on you to monitor certain things. So, you tape the round pieces to the areas of your pain i.e. neck, back, etc. You wear the Tens Unit in a belt buckle pouch provided with the unit. The unit, once turned on, sends an electric current or shock to the areas of pain so many times per minute. It really shocks the nerves. It doesn't heal the pain. So in other words, it tricks your nerves into believing the pain is gone. You control the frequency and intensity by the control box which you are wearing (Tens Unit). The shock of electric current is supposed to make your pain dissipate, and be redirected. My mom says it really helped her a lot. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have one and use it a ton and in fact I have something implanted in my body that feels like one constantly that helps control my pain (a Spain Cord Stimulator). Basically the pads connect into the cords, and you take off the sticky pads and place them in a place where you would like to feel the stimulation. You turn it on, and ten you feel a tingly sensation. They all work slightly different, but there is a frequency setting, and usually a timer. They all have slightly different features, and you just know how to work the one you own!

I've used it before, just to try it out (not for pain relief). It seems to work by diverting your mind to the point being massaged.

Oh, and never turn it on full blast. It will send you through the roof!

a tiny battery operated machine that sends out a electric shock that is supposed to trick your nerves, or re route them, never worked for me, however some people say it helps, I just dont see how, unless the pain is mental

They are indicated in pains, esp. neuralgic pains. I have heard of them but did not use them so far, since I could manage the pains in other ways. So, if you want to learn of other means of pain control, pl. write to me.
