some interesting answers. But, what if there is no such thing as a soul? What if our perception of our own personification (our consciousness, our first-person, our sense of 'self') is an illusion? Is the response you feel not just a psychosomatic response to our own music preference?
Is the illusion of love not just a similar response to the reaction to music? How about the illusion of choice?

I suppose my real question is, what is the nature of emotion?

Sometimes. I sing classical music, and that touches my soul. I love good pipe organ music and beautiful piano solos. Even rock n' roll can touch my soul, but it's just not happening with certain types of music. I'll be honest and admit that there are a few musical genres I can't stand. Some of them are even quite popular, but not with me, personally.

The spiritual world is described in the scriptures, apart from various other things as, ". . . EVERY WORD IS A SONG, every gait is a dance, the FLUTE is the favorite attendant. . ."
The spirit soul being a resident of the spiritual world is certainly is touched by the MUSIC.

Music doesn't touch your soul it generates an emotional responce based on the persons musical preferance!
Gospel music makes me want to hurl for distance.
Rap drive me nuts.
Now Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, or Classic Rock that is music I can really get into.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A GOD!

In spirituality, one can realize (merge) with God through the medium of music. The universe was created using the vibrations of sound. Every thing in the universe resonates at a certain frequency. Dark and heavy music is negative, and affects people in a negative way. Light music will affect people in a positive way. Music dedicated to God (spiritual music) does in fact touch the soul, as the soul is a direct component of God.

Music is my life. What ever I do I want music around me. I find inspiration and comfort in music.
I find that God speaks to people through music. Praise and Worship music helps me find my self in the Lord. It gives me a feeling of true peace and puts me in the presence of the Lord.
Music is an integral part in my life.

~ Yes, Mawkish...
Music does touch my soul.
There are MANY spiritual songs that bring me tears of joy... some bring me tears of sadness... but they touch my soul.
Enough so, that most EVERY nite, when I lay down to sleep, I will lay my guitar across my chest and play worship music to the Lord... often I will take a well known hymn and replace lyrics to offer up prayers to the Lord...
And even though I can't carry a tune, our voices that sing to Him are like a sweet sent unto the Lord.

Music is my everything; my spirit, my being, my soul.
I sometimes don't even know how I feel until I hear it in a song.

Absolutely.
Mozart, Ozzy, System of a Down, Nickelback, Bob Seger, Disturbed, Jethro Tull...to name a few.
Blue skies, yellow corn, green grass, a wonderful girl, and music is as close as we will get to heaven.

it does yes
i have been thinking about music this week
and it seems to be one very common aspect we all share
even tribes that are untouched by the modern world still share this love of music and dance ...
it does seem to be a very natural thing for us to do and enjoy
