I'm just about done with college and will be getting a BA in CJ and a minor in Sociology. The thing is I want to work for Homeland Security as a field agent or something with smuggling or fraud. I don't know where to start after I graduate, should I do some interns? and for who? Should I do some volunteer work in my local P.D.? will the experience help? How do I get started? If anyone can point me in the right direction or give me an idea, it would be really great...

If you will be graduating, why not get a job ?Homeland Scurity people in the field are generally ex-military or ex-cops.... The CJ degree is good if you want to be in Corrections and In Police work , especially when backed up with Sociology..Try your local police departmenrs. There are law enforcement careers that aren't in the field if you prefer......You could also try Immigration Dept, Boarder Patrol, State Police, or anything else that would help to maintain security.......Good Luck

The degree isnt experience...you dont get into agents or investigators spots with just a BA....you need about 4 years in the field to go Federal without some special endorsement...speaking Farsi, something like that...best bet....go into some branch of the military..the feebies love Marines....otherwise try some municipal PD for awhile...but the real money is Federal and they almost require some type field experience..especially with all the vets coming home now with years of urban warfare experience behind them....you are just getting started on the learning road....or stay in school for a year or so in a critical language...Farsi,Spanish,Russian
