My parents and I have two dogs, Bernie and Rosie. Rosie has gone to the vet's and Bernie has been left behind. They are so close, and Bernie cries and whines like a baby because they are parted.
I'm told not to let him out into the garden, but I can feed him a treat or some water, but he won't touch them, he sits and whines. Please can you tell me how to make him feel calm or to keep him occupied!

I don't think there's a great deal you can - you know how it is when you really miss someone, its just the same for your dog. Just be sweet to him, maybe wrap a hot water bottle up in a towel so he has something warm to snuggle up to when he goes to sleep. He will eventually settle down if she is going to be away for a while. He will be fine as soon as Rosie gets home.

Don't baby him because like a person up above said, that only reinforces the behavior.

Instead, try to engage him in active play. Run around and see if you can get him to chase you! Toss a ball around! Play "I'm gonna get you." (That's one of the favorites at our house.) Take him for a walk. Teach him a new trick. There are lots of things you can try.

Just *don't* pick him up and cuddle and coo him and act like you want to soothe him.

Separation anxiety is a problem with dogs because they are pack animals. The thing that will resolve the situation is the pack being back together, and if that is not possible...then time.

Try using a product known as a D.A.P. infuser. It calms scared, sick, lonely dogs. It works like a charm. It gives off the scent of a mother dog when she is nursing her young to keep them calm. We use these for all of our dogs. http://www.petsnmore.com/home.asp?display=full&cid=0&itemid=VPLDAPKIT&itemname=D%2EA%2EP%2E+Electric+Diffuser+Kit
