I know there are upscaling dvd players but since most monitors can handle higher resolution than tvs and also progressive format I was wondering if there was such a thing as a software upscaling programme to display my dvd movie in a higher resolution via my pc monitor. Anyhone heard of this method or know any links ?

Of course you can, but why bother. You pass your signal through one more scaler/deinterlacer (DVD-PC-TV) and there is no guarantee that the TV can't do a better job in scaling than both an upconverting DVD player or the graphics card of your PC.

I think most computer DVD software already puts the view at its maximum resolution.

Also the resolution/quality on DVDS, especially regular ones and not the HD DVDS or Blu-ray ones, are limited so even if you upscaled them, there would be noticable blocking and distortions.

Some DVD player software like PowerDVD by Cyberlink have aspect ratios, and if you disable it, the video will likely fill the whole screen, though may look distorted due to many DVDs being filmed widescreen and most monitors not being that ratio.

Some software DVD players also have deinterlacing and hardware acceleration and the like which are probably able to display the full progressive format of the DVD. This is also because monitors and DVDS are displayed slightly differently.

So as far as I know, the software DVD players on the computer should do the job. Mess around with the options in a Software DVD player. I reccomend downloading the PowerDVD trial and see if it suits your needs.
