It's about an hour and forty-five minute drive from Bangkok, it's 145km (90 mi.) from BKK, many taxis actually have a flat fare rate to Pattaya, I believe it's 1000 baht, just make sure before you go. As far as nightlife, Pattaya has it all, the areas around Central and South Pattaya are probably the bawdiest and raunchiest you'll find anywhere. If you want something quieter, head to North Pattaya or further south to Jomtien, have fun!

If you are going to Pattaya by taxi it will be expensive because the trip is going to take an hour or two. It will probably be 1000-2000 bhat. But that price is negotiable with the taxi driver and I think you need to tell them before hand (so they can be prepared). So you need to find a taxi that you can sort of trust..and a taxi that is sort of comfortable. But another great option is by bus. It costs only 100-200 bhat, which is really cheap in comparison to going by taxi. It is safe too because there are lots of people on the bus. To take the bus, goto Ekamai Bus Terminal (opposite of Major Ekamai movie theater). They have buses leaving every hour or two.
When you get to Pattaya, you can expect ALOT of nightlight/entertainment. From movie theaters to night clubs/agogo/strip clubs/etc... It is practically alive when the sun goes down (more so than when the sun is up!) - There are tons of things to do. What do you want to see? Transvestites show? Strip clubs? Bars? walk on the beach? shopping for thai handicrafts? shopping in the mall? food? dining on the boat/ship?They've got practically everything there.

You can find car services that will charge 700-900 baht, or take the bus. It is 117 baht and just as fast. Go to the Ekami bus station. Trip can range from 1 1/2 hours to 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic.
