Sort of curious about this because i met a dog and the owner said something about getting it removed off thier dog. At first i was like "why???" then i saw it and it was defidently not attached to anything. Maybe you guys and gals out there can fill me in on this.

It is called a dew claw. The scissors-type is used to trim a toenail that is so long that it is curling in a circle. Long toenails can grow into the toe-pad. This most often happens to dew claws, the claw on the inner side of the paw. Dew claws do not touch the ground so they are not worn down as the dog walks.
The dew claw is attached to the leg by loose skin. The dew claw can usually be bent away from the leg so that you can fit a guillotine type trimmer over the tip of the dew claw
Alot of reputable breeders these days do NOT remove them. They are there for a purpose.

It is called the "dew claw". I trim dog and cat nails all the time and find it very annoying when the dew claws curl into the paw pad. Sometime's dew claws have two or three nails attached to them.

It's actually a thumb or big toe. Can you believe it?

Its a dew claw and sometimes they are removed shortly after birth, about the same time they dock the tail and ears in breeds that need it. My dog still has her dew claws, you just need to remember to trim them at the same time as the other claws. They do have a tendency to curl back around into the pad.

It is called a dewclaw, and sometimes they are not well attached, and should be removed to avoid injury.

they are often removed at 3-5 days of age, but some breed standards require them to be left alone..

they are called dewclaws.alot of people remove them but i wouldn't. if you watch that is how the dog scratches around his eyes.mostly only hunters remove them so they won't get hung in barbwire.
