What percentage of your family income goes for (car, health, home, medical and life) insurance?
Would you say yours is the average american family situation?

As a Canadian, I don't have to pay for basic health insurance, but we do pay for "extended coverage". (Basic coverage is REALLY basic.) We get our dental, extended medical and life insurance through my husband's employer. (I am self-employed.) We pay for car and home insurance in the same way that you do in the US. I would think that our insurance costs are no more than about 5 % including all types. It may even be a bit lower for us -- but we are both working.

Mine is NOT average, because I'm in Houston - Hurricane Alley. Anyone in Florida will ALSO pay through the nose for homeowners, wind and flood insurance. We probably pay 10% of our annual gross income for insurance. If you add Social Security and Medicare premiums, which is "free government insurance" for OTHER people, it's closer to 35%.
