Typically, we recommend the opposite sex. It's going to seriously reduce dominance issues in your dogs. Even if you have never had problems before, you'd be surprised when you bring a new addition home.
Dogs were domesticated from wolves. In the wild, in wolf packs, the pack is run by a dominant male and dominant female (the breeding pair). Many people will tell you that there is just one "alpha" dog. This is not true. In nature there is a breeding pair that rules the pack. Therefore, naturally, your female dog is going to have less issues with co-dominance if the new dog is a male. If it is a female - regardless of how nice either dog is - one of them is simply going to have to be dominant. There will, at some point, be a knock down drag out fight. That's not to say that you cannot have two dogs of the same sex, but the adjustment is going to be much, much smoother if you have opposite sexes.
My mother runs a dog rescue in Ohio and she swears that opposite sexes take to each other much quicker than same sex dogs. Not that they won't, but you are going to have alot more stress and seperating if you get a female for your chi.
Hope this helps!!

If she is bossy and spoiled, a male will do better..the worst fights I have had in many years of raising dogs, were between two dominant females..
I raised Chihuahuas for many years.
Watch the litter while they are playing. If there is more than one male, choose the male that plays nicely with the others..Don't get a strutty bullying puppy..as he won't get along as nicely with your female..

well, this question very much depends on a few keep factors.
Is she fixed? Fixed females will do okay with a fixed or natural female.
Natural Females will do okay with fixed females. 2 intact females will fight for dominance, attention, food, toys, treats, everything. 2 intact females will actually fight harder, longer, and cause more pain and damage then 2 males.
Now if your female dog is not fixed. I would suggest getting either a fixed male or female.
You should never have to intact dogs of the opposite sex in the same house, unless you are an experienced breeder.
I would suggest getting either
A. a young female, intact or fixed, and either getting her fixed at 6 or 7 months, or getting your dog fixed now..
B. an adolecent male who is already fixed.

I have five chihuahua's, two males and three females. Mine all get along great with each other. When you go pick out the puppy, I would bring your female with you and see which one she seems interested in, and how they get along.I think it's just a matter of preference. As long as they are fixed, in time they will both adjust.

Would suggest a male as i had owned both male and female dogs before and now that my male dog has passed away, i got another female for companionship to my other female dog. My older female tend to "boss" the smaller one.
So with this experience, it is better to get a male for your female dog.
Good luck!

Both sexes will be fine. Dogs work out their problems and will learn to live with each other.Even if there are a few minor skiffs, they will get along. Give the dog of your choice 3 months to get accustomed to your chihuahua and vice versa. I've done the same sex and opposite sex with no problems. Have fun.

Dont get a male if its going to be in the house, a friend of mine made that mistake and i watched it urinate all over the house (on the vaccuum cleaner, bed posts, corners of the couches, washing machine). I think males are only good for outside because they mark their territory everywhere.
